Kinesiology tape is a type of stretchy tape applied to the surface of the skin to protect the area and promote healing.
K Tape can be applied to relieve the tension often associated with weakened or inflamed muscles and tendons. It can help by reducing the pain caused by the overload and be helpful for engaging actively in rehab.
Depending how the K Tape is applied it is thought to activate stretch receptors in the soft tissue which feedback to our higher brain centres. This positively influences the control of muscle tension by activating muscle spindles. This in turn improves our ability to flex and respond to the stresses and strains of increased activity.
When applied to the skin with stretch the K Tape naturally wants to recoil. As a result, it lifts the skin and fascia to allow blood and lymph flow to increase which may be beneficial in the recovery of soft tissue injuries.
How long does it last?
It all depends on the application and the usage. Most tapes are water resistant. We recommend that you keep it on for a maximum of 24-48hrs. The length of time will vary depending on the area of application. For example, applying to the feet may only last 1-2 days (more wear and tear) whilst postural areas could last 5+ days.
Our Rehab Therapists Alannah and Georgie, and our Osteopath Anna are all trained in the application of K-Tape so please book in!
