The Winter Weather – Survival Tip NO.5

Rebecca Nicholas, clinic director and principle Chiropractor, at Back 2 Balance, Hove, gives her tops tips for surviving Christmas in a 12 day countdown – the winter weather

The Winter Weather

The weather has started to turn and we are all dressing for the occasion with hat, scarves, gloves and thick winter coats. I love people watching and I often see members of the public walking outside in the cold, shoulders hunched, head cranked forwards and braced, and scuttling around. I think to myself “oh their poor spine and muscles with all that tension building up”.

So my Chiropractic tips are as follows:

  • Remember to relax those shoulders down, don’t build up tension in them.
  • Do not have your scarf wrapped too tightly around your neck as it pulls it forwards.
  • Make sure you remove your scarf and coat when you get in the car and put the seat belt on.
  • When outside, relax and breathe whilst walking around, learn to think about how you use your body, and whether it’s going to love you or hate you!

Other thoughts at this time of year, are the lack of sunshine and the cold/damp feeling in the air. Lack of the sunshine vitamin (vitamin D) can, for some people, make a huge symptomatic difference. I would recommend most people to take a vitamin D supplement – a good quality one mind you (ask your chiropractor to recommend one). This is especially important if you tend to be one of those people who hate the winter months; get loads of bugs and viruses; and generally want to hibernate. Here is a great blog on how to beat the winter blues.

The cold/dampness in the air plays havoc with joint aches and pains. Plenty of my clients are their own barometer and can tell me exactly when an area of low pressure is coming! Funny for me but not those people who suffer with joint pain. If you are one of those people, then I would recommend getting plenty of water and omega 3’s to help juice and oil your joints. Most people would benefit from a good quality and high quantity supplement. At Back 2 Balance we all take Nordic oil and sell it in the clinic below the recommended retail price! Ask the front desk or your chiropractor.

Enjoy the winter time, relax those shoulders down and create good health nutritionally with sufficiency of vitamins and minerals. What do you do to help your body over the winter months?
