Megan our Osteopath here at Back 2 Balance talks about positivity. Working at Back2balance has been a journey for Megan in more ways than one. Not only has it been a professional one as she started her career as an osteopath, but it has also been a massive personal journey in becoming the person she is today.
GLASS HALF FULL OR GLASS HALF EMPTY?
Mental wellbeing is huge these days and rightly so. However, I feel that just because someone is free of a diagnosable mental disorder, it doesn’t mean that their mind is optimal. What do I mean by optimal? Well being positive, grateful and seeing the good in life and situations instead of automatically seeing the bad or the worst outcome. Not letting yourself and decisions be ruled by irrational fear and anxiety, and also letting said irrational fear stop you from living your best life. You should also be able to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Ask yourself some tough questions, does any of this relate to you?
The road to an optimal mind isn’t an easy one, it’s one that has to be constantly worked upon, just like most things with the human body. Think of the mind like a muscle that needs to be exercised. If you slack on your exercise then it will just go back to how it was before.
Positivity!
Be positive! Far too often I see people who always jump to a negative conclusion or expect that the worst is going to happen. Why do we do this? A book that I read called ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ by Susan Jefferies (linked below) spoke of the ‘no lose model’. This model explains that when making a decision there really is no way to lose. Think of all the good things that could happen with a certain outcome instead of expecting and thinking of the worst outcome. Any situation that comes out of making a decision, even if it’s not the best one, will be an opportunity for growth and learning, therefore there really is no losing!
If you struggle to see the good in things, one exercise you can do is write down 3 things you are grateful for everyday for at least 28 days. This will start getting your mind seeing through a positive lens instead of a negative one. Try asking someone 3 things they’re grateful for, it makes me sad when people can’t think of anything! Even if you’re having a bad day, look at the small things, like the fact that we have running water!
Read Books
During my time at Back2balance I have read a fair few books on this stuff, the scientific name is positive psychology. I believe books help positivity. Here are my favourite books that you should check out. Even if you think you are the most positive person ever, there is always room for improvement! If you think of yourself as a bit of a negative nelly, then well done for recognising that. The most negative of people wouldn’t be able to see that through their clouded mind. Embrace it, it can only make your life better! FYI we have some of these books in the clinic for you to borrow for free!
