Osteoporosis and Exercise
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis effects around 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50, with many more fractures being linked with osteoporosis. As Becky’s previous blog describes the physiology behind osteoporosis and the effects and complications of the condition.
Treatments for Osteoporosis
There are a few different common treatment modalities currently for osteoporosis. One of medication. This is often the most frequently used intervention prescribed by a GP. Taking medication such as Bisphosphonates or Raloxifene for postmenopausal women, helps to reduce the amount the bone is been broken down. As well as provide less of a drop off in hormones postmenopausal. Both of these are seen to only slow down the effects of osteoporosis.
Diet has also been documented as a form of treatment by consuming food high in vitamin D and calcium. It is believed that eating foods rich with these vitamins and minerals will help to maintain bone structure and strength.
The implementation of a tailored exercise program is now becoming more recognised and accepted treatment for those suffering with osteoporosis. It is believed that the benefits of regular physical activity outweigh any potential risks or concerns for an individual to partake in exercise.
Exercises
A study looking into the effects of exercises on osteoporosis found that shorter, quicker exercise periods spread across 3 days a week to be found the most beneficial. They suggested it’s due to the induvial and how well they interact with the shorter program. Finding that individuals were able to complete the program with more energy and effort believing that this impacted the physiology of subjects. It showed that an acute increase in heart rate and blood pressure along with the demand of exercise on the body created a increase in bone mineral density after 6 weeks of exercise.
This study then lead into the development of ‘Too fit to Fracture’ which is a current group of experts within the field of osteoporosis. Leading the way in which we treat and class osteoporosis. They surveyed current medical practitioners and those suffering with the condition. They found there to be a natural fear avoidance in prescribing and partaking in physical activity despite the positive benefits. They discussed the best way in which to re-educate both professionals and those suffering from it in ways to deal with it.
With this being said and with new findings coming out, physical activity is becoming the go to treatment for those suffering from osteoporosis. As a way in reducing the decrease in bone minerals and structure. As well as causing a demand in tissue stress to promote new healthy growth.
