Nutritious Facts about your Christmas Food!

During the festive period we always punish ourselves for over-eating and consuming unhealthy foods. We should always eat in moderation and follow a balanced, healthy diet.

Here are some nutritious facts about some of the foods we commonly eat over Christmas:

  • BRUSSEL SPROUTS! While some of us hate these small balls of bin juice, a lot of us look forward to them being on our Christmas plate. 
  • Brussel sprouts are extremely good for you. There are only around 28 calories in a serving of brussel sprouts, yet they are packed with lots of nutrients, especially fibre, vitamin K and vitamin C.
  • Vitamin K is essential for promoting healthy blood clotting and bone health.
  • Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant which promotes iron absorption and healthy immune function. Perfect for fighting that winter cold!
  • They are also full of the antioxidant kaempferol, which may reduce cancer growth, decrease inflammation and promote heart health.

 

  • MASHED CARROT AND SWEDE! Some of us might be having this tasty combination alongside our Christmas meal.
  • Swede is packed with the phytochemical myricetin which may protect our cells from carcinogenic mutation & diabetes.
  • Swede also contains lots of vitamin B6 which is essential for brain and blood health, reducing tiredness and fatigue and supports healthy hair.
  • Carrots are full of essential nutrients such as beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin which help with eye health.
  • Vitamin A in carrots helps protect our skin cells from UV damage, and the collagen in carrots helps our skin stay plump and young!

 

  • CINNAMON! This delicious spice is found in lots of drinks and food in the festive season. It has been used as an ingredient throughout history, dating back as far as Ancient Egypt. It used to be rare and valuable and was regarded as a gift fit for kings.
  • In a study that compared the antioxidant activity of 26 spices, cinnamon wound up as the clear winner, even outranking “superfoods” like garlic and oregano.
  • Cinnamon is very good at helping to reduce cholesterol levels by lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while “good” HDL cholesterol remains stable.
  • Test-tube studies have also shown cinnamon can help fight the HIV virus in humans!
