The New Year is now upon us and people are busy setting their resolutions to try and create a better lifestyle for themselves.
Most commonly people’s New Years resolutions consist of:
- Weight loss
- Getting in shape
- Being more productive
- Spending more quality time with family & friends
- Travelling
- Achieving a business related goal
- And much, much more!
However, it’s common knowledge that most people tend to stray from their New Years resolutions rather quickly as they fall back into old habits.
Why is this? Why do people seem to lose their motivation and willpower so quickly after setting ambitious yet achievable goals for themselves whenever the New Year comes around? Also, why is it that some people seem to sail through their resolutions ticking off goal after goal relentlessly? What’s their secret?
It all comes down to enjoyment. If you don’t enjoy the method you use to achieve a goal then you’re far less likely to see it through to the end. You can start with all the motivation and willpower the World has to offer but if you don’t actually enjoy the steps that will take you to the finished result then you’re putting a huge unnecessary obstacle in the way of your success.
For example, if someone has the objective of losing weight in the New Year and they choose a diet that they don’t like the taste of and attend the gym to get fit when they don’t enjoy the gym atmosphere, how likely to do you think it is that they’ll stick it out until they see results?
In contrast, if the same person was to choose a diet containing foods they find really tasty and a form of exercise that they found both fun and engaging, what are the chances of their success in this scenario? The chances of success are of course much higher!
Using the right “vehicle” to take you to your desired outcome is essential to your long term success. Relying solely on motivation and willpower is not the strongest way to achieve your goals.
When we do something we enjoy to achieve a goal it removes feelings of dread and dissatisfaction. Do you remember a class at school that you really loathed? Using a method that we don’t really enjoy to achieve a goal can produce similar feelings. In contrast, do you remember a class that you loved attending? Did it feel like hard work? Of course it didn’t, however, you may have still had to “work hard” but the work felt more enjoyable and created a sense of achievement.
Besides, if you don’t enjoy the journey to success then what’s the point in embarking on it in the first place? As the old saying goes, “The journey IS the goal”…
So when you’re thinking about your New Year’s resolutions for 2019, remember to try and use “vehicles” or “methods” that you enjoy that will take you to success. There are a variety of ways to achieve the same result with most desires in life.
