Daniela our massage therapist here at Back 2 Balance has written a blog on how to manage Arthritis, she explains what it is and the different types.
Management of Arthritis
Arthritis literally means “joint inflammation” and describes the swelling, redness, heat, and pain caused by tissue injury or joint inflammation.
There are different types or arthritis:
- Osteoarthritis.
- Rheumatoid arthritis.
- Fibromyalgia.
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
- Ankylosing Spondylitis.
- Gout.
- Psoriatic Arthritis.
- Bursitis.
- Tendinitis
Pain can be acute and chronic: lasting few seconds or longer, but fade away as healing occurs, or it can last a lifetime. It can be caused by muscle strain, fatigue and inflammation of the synovial membranes of the joints, the tendons, or the ligaments.
People suffering from arthritis experience swelling, heat, redness, or damage within the joint. Some patients feel pain in their joints when they first get out of bed in the morning. Others develop pain after prolonged use of the joint.
Diet
Conventional medication include different kind of pain relievers. An important aspect of managing arthritis naturally is a balanced diet. Weight control is important as extra weight puts pressure on some joints and can aggravate the condition.
For some people, dairy and gluten plus very acidic food consumed in excess such as meat, alcohol and caffeine may cause intolerances and minor digestive upsets. These reactions can aggravate the inflammation caused by arthritis. Patients should instead increase consumption of fruits and vegetables for the vitamins and antioxidants content. It needs to be noted that citrus fruits have an alkalinizing effect despite their citric acid.
Supplements
A nutritional supplement called Glucosamine sulphate can also help the reconstruction and healing of cartilage. It is a amino sugar that our body used to build larger, spongy, water-holding molecules. These contribute to the formation of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and bones. Our body is in constant demand for glucosamine as it is involved in the constant reconstruction of the connective tissue broken down by normal use. Normally our body produces enough glucosamine but the production may be impaired by conditions. These are factors such as severe stress, surgery, burns, major injuries and ageing. Some studies have compared glucosamine sulphate with ibuprofen for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
Exercise lessens joint pain and stiffness and increases flexibility and muscle strength.
Massage
Massage also can help;
- Relieve pain.
- Ease muscle stiffness.
- Reduce inflammation by improving blood and lymphatic circulation.
Massage uses soft tissue manipulation to help release muscle tension and increase flexibility. As there are different types of arthritis it is always recommended to check with your doctor to see if massage therapy is appropriate for your form of arthritis.
