Benefits of supplements in back pain

Megan, an osteopath at Back 2 Balance, has explored supplementation for her own health optimisation. In her latest blog, she talks through some of the main supplements we recommend and sell in our Brighton and Hove clinic.

At back2balance we take a holistic approach to human healing and well being, there are 3 different types of stressors that can cause health issues to arise-

Physical stressors– for example, a trauma that causes a cut to the skin or a fall that causes soft tissue damage. It can also involve repetitive strain injuries from playing sports. Or maybe postural/occupational habits that over time cause muscles and joints to become tight and tired. Even the passive act of not moving and stretching has now been shown to create scar tissue and damage. We treat this element with hands-on treatment from your osteopath, chiropractor or massage therapist, and stretches and exercises to help maintain these changes on a longer-term basis.

Emotional– e.g. chronic stress over time raises the stress hormones in your body such as cortisol. This can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, weight gain, fatigue, and irritability. Helping our clients with the physical element or their problem can reduce stress, however it is important to deal with any outside stress that may be slowing down your healing, follow the link to this video on tips on how to deal with life stressors.

Chemical element– this is what clients may be putting into their bodies that is increasing inflammatory markers, leading to increased pain and flare ups of the current problem even without any physical stressors. it can also cause cell changes putting you more at risk for developing problems such as cancers, diabetes type 2, inflammatory bowel disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Food and drinks that increase inflammation are sugar, processed foods, red meats, diary products and alcohol.

So along with trying to keep consumption of these products to a minimal (follow this link to see some foods that have anti-inflammatory properties) at Back 2 Balance we recommend taking these supplements to aid the body.

Turmeric and black pepper capsules– turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory while the black pepper aids absorption of the turmeric. This is going to help decrease pain, aid healing in the short term. In the long term it will help prevent the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease. Research has even found that turmeric may be beneficial in helping to prevent and fight certain cancers.

Vitamin D– as we are lacking sunshine most of the time here in the UK its difficult for our bodies to get enough vitamin D naturally. Vitamin D is important for maintaining healthy bone density which naturally decreases as we get older. Therefore, taking this supplement, will help prevent the risk of developing osteoporosis as we get older which in turn will then help prevent any fractures from falling over. It also helps to improve mood and helps with nerve health.

Omega 3 oil– studies have found that omega 3 plays a vital role in the health of the heart and cardiovascular system. Another great natural anti-inflammatory and also helps with increasing brain function.
